How Rain Fall Affects the Crop Production?

Before selecting the crop for our field we have to consider the effect of climate change on agriculture. Certain factors which are beneficial for the crop production and management like, the environmental study, crop growth cycle etc. must be understood properly.

World’s climate is ever changing due to global warming and its effect is being felt all over the world. One of the most important parameters of climate is rainfall. There is a direct relationship between climate and agriculture. So when rainfall patterns change, its effect is directly felt on cropping patterns worldwide. Again, as a result of depletion of the ozone layer, there will be more heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere, which, according to climate models, will shift rainfall/precipitation patterns in two major ways. The first shift is in strengthening the current patterns, which means the wet regions would get wetted and dry regions would get drier.
Rainfall is the major factor in the growth and production of food crops both at germination and fruit development stage. A minimum of 4-5 month rainy season is required for getting good crops. Both shortage and abundance of rainfall affect the crop growth and production.

Effect of Drought / low Rainfall on Agriculture:

v   Crop will face a period of drought condition; if it will not get sufficient water then there might be foliage burnt.
v   The plant growth will reduce.

v   Farmer may lose all the crop if there will be a prolong drought condition.

Methods to Overcome Drought:

Ø   Growing of Short duration Crops.
Ø   Preferring the drought tolerant cultivars.
Ø   Efficient storage of rain water for future use.
Ø   Mulching of crops with suitable materials to reduce evaporation of water from root zone and
Ø Growing tap rooted species, which uptake water from deeper layer of earth, than the shallow rooted one.
